Nominet has announced that their controversial .uk domain names will be available for registration from June 10th 2014, with first refusal being given to the existing .co.uk domain name holder.

The exact process for determining who gets the .uk domain is not as simple as it first seems and so Nominet have created a rights lookup tool which will allow registrants to easily check who has the rights to the .uk version of an existing domain at launch time.

Nominet’s plans for opening up second level registrations directly under the .uk namespace met with significant resistance in both rounds of the consultation process, which eventually led to Nominet deciding to go ahead with the proposal despite the significant criticism from the Nominet membership and other stakeholders.
